[Zeffie-Users] How can the main system perl installation on Raq4 be upgraded?

Is there a way to upgrade the main Perl installation on a Raq4 to
something more up to date than 5.005? I've got perl 5.8.7 built and
installed in /usr/local on my Raq4, but none of the main system
applications use it and installing SpamAssassin 3.1.0 fails because of
missing things in 5.005.. 8-)

While I think having the later Perl in /usr/local is good, it's not as
good as using it to replace the main Perl installation.

Is the whole GUI on the server tied into specific features of perl 5.005?
What stops a Perl upgrade from working when I specify 'y' to the question
about whether to link /usr/local/bin/perl to /usr/bin/perl? Last time I
tried that the installation failed during the final phase where all the
files are copied into their new locations but it's quite a while ago and
I'm not sure what the actual error was now.

Once I get Perl upgraded I want to rebuild php so that it includes
gettext() support which will allow the sites on the server using phpBB for
forums to offer proper international language conversions. At the moment
having all the site forums restricted to English only limits their scope
to a global audience.

Craig.
