Have you checkd if there are that many instances at unholy times, e.g. 4
o'clock in the morning? Perhaps it is the same thing as with mysql-max.
if there are many hits at a given time there will be many instances
which die after a time ...

Tha admin server is just a std. apache. The number of instances spawned
at a time is given in the file
/etc/admserv/conf/httpd.conf
There you can find some lines:
MinSpareServers 1
MaxSpareServers 5
If you set MaxSpareServers to a lower number there should not be that
"much" spare servers, I think.
