Ya I wouldn't advise that.... as far as the perl goes I like to install
ActivePerl in /opt and then if you really need it to be /usr/bin/perl you
have to change all the gui related cgi's.. something like this pkg does...

as far as the gettext.... I updated the php build.... you can get a test
rpm here... and yes it requires the os-update
